Enrollment ratio, graduates-versus-new-students ratio and promotion rate of graduates of 9-year compulsory education stand at 100% throughout the years. The gross enrollment rate of universities and colleges reached 68.5%.
There are 754 schools of different varieties and at different levels (including schools for children of migrant workers), among which 22 are colleges and universities and 5 are independent colleges. There are 219,300 students and 59,300 graduates in general institutes of higher learning. There are 754 kindergartens (including private ones) in Suzhou.
Education internationalization has enjoyed sound development. 565 schools (including colleges and universities) have sister schools overseas. There are 6 schools for children of foreigners, 1 for children of Taiwan businessmen and 1 for children of competent professionals returned from overseas. There are 8 China-foreign cooperative education organizations mainly for higher education, and 29 China-foreign cooperative education projects. Also, many famous overseas universities and colleges have their campuses in Suzhou.
Soochow University has established exchange relationship with over 150 universities, colleges and research institutions in over 20 countries and regions. It accepts over 2000 overseas students from over 60 countries and regions every year.
