Ancient Wengxiang Village, next to the Zhai Feng Dock and Small North Lake, is an ancient village with many well-preserved old houses. In the Tang Dynasty, it was the location of Xi Family’s residence where once was classified into three areas: upper Xi, middle Xi and common Xi, and it was also an overpowering place for many businessmen’s settlement as it adjoined the dock of Xi Family’s Lake. Since the Ming Dynasty, Weng Bian, Weng Family’s ancestor, has managed one successful business and bought land to construct a large scale of houses there. Moreover, his descendants built houses and gardens nearby one by one, which ultimately formed a long deep alley initially named as Wengxiang. Then, for the reason of marriage, other people from diverse surnames’ Family came here to choose a nice place and build their houses, and till the middle and late periods of the Ming Dynasty, this trend had flourished so much that there were countless buildings, houses and restaurants dotted in neat order, which seems like a castle in which at least 10 checkpoints have been erected for each passway. At each checkpoint, there were guardians on duty to protect the castle from any stealthy rats after the gate shut down.
There are a number of historical relics in Wengxiang Village, including the Wangyue Soil-Platform of the Wu, Yue, and the Spring and Autumn periods, the Tomb of the General Xi Wen of the Tang Dynasty, as well as the Imperial Garden Alley which has ever welcomed the Kang Xi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Together with many provincial units of culture-preserve, such as the well-remained Ruiai Hall and the Ningde Hall, and some other municipal units of culture-preserve, such as the Liuyi Well, the Qi Garden, the Song Feng Hall and so forth. Additionally, some classical buildings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, like the Big Dun Hall of Xi’s Family, the Gu Xiang Hall, and the Ruiai Hall, as well as the Xiude Hall of Yan’s Family, the Zunde Hall and the Jiande Hall (its name has been changed as Xi’s Family latter became its owner), furthermore, the Rongchun Hall of Liu’s Family, the Yi Zhuang Hall of Shi’s Family and so forth.
