Suzhou Library was founded in 1914, with its predecessor the Xuegu Hall of Zhengyi Academy. It was once the No.2 library of Jiangsu Province and among the earliest public libraries nationwide.
The central library is located at 858, Renmin Road, covering 16,000 square meters, with a total floor area of 25,000 square meters. Currently, it is home to more than 4,000,000 volumes of books including nearly 200,000 ancient books, among which 20,000 rare ancient books are best known nationwide. The library is a first-level national public library that is characterized by garden-style architecture and modernized internal functions.
Since 2005, Suzhou Museum has been committed to establishing a central and branch library service system covering the urban area of Suzhou. So far, 79 branch libraries, two 24-hour libraries and 95 online borrowing community delivery points have been established， equipped with two mobile library vans, which has to a large extent guaranteed the reading rights of the citizens.
The innovative central and branch library service system known as Suzhou Model of Suzhou Library has been promoted nationwide. the innovative and pioneering Online Community Delivery, Happy Reading Baby Plan and You Choose Books and I Pay for Them service and other services have created a brand new reading experience for citizens. Suzhou Library has become an indispensible public culture space in the life of Suzhou citizens.
