Study Chinese at Soochow University

  Overseas students are always welcome to come to study in Soochow University. We accept and have many long-term visiting students learning Chinese, short-term trainees and senior scholars learning Chinese language and Chinese economy and culture, and several other areas. In recent years, the school has accepted nearly two thousand foreign students, who come from Japan, Korea, the United States, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Britain and other more than 50 countries and regions.

  Soochow University has a strong teaching team with operational capacity, abundant teaching experience, and good reputation among students. Students who joined the Chinese language programs will  feel more and more confident in their Chinese language skills.

  1.  Long-term Chinese Language Program

  This program is designed to train students’ Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Classes are arranged to cater to different skill levels and students will be divided into different classes based on their current Chinese ability. A typical class has 15 to 25 students. This program starts every February and September. Students who attend all the classes and pass the exams will be awarded a Soochow University Certificate upon completion of the program.

  Duration: 1 semester (18 to 20 weeks) to 6 semesters

  Application Deadline: Winter semester (starts in February): End of December

  Fall semester (starts in September): End of June

  Compulsory Courses: Chinese Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, Grammar,

  Electives: Intensive Chinese, Chinese Literature, Chinese Culture, Chinese History, Chinese Geography, Chinese Customs and Festivals, etc.

  Chinese Culture Club: Peking Opera, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, Traditional Chinese Instrument-Er Hu, Chinese Taiji, etc.

  Please note: Compulsory courses are offered in the morning, from Monday to Friday and Electives are offered in the afternoon according to the student’s interest. Chinese culture club is free and open to all the students.

  2. Short-term Chinese Language Program

  This program is designed to train students’ Chinese language skill and enable students to learn Chinese culture at the same time. It is usually available for groups of students from exchange universities or institutes. Usually we offer the Chinese language classes in the morning and the Chinese culture classes, site visits in the afternoon. The culture classes are presented in a lecture format in Chinese or English (translators in other languages may also be available).

  Duration: 2 to 8 weeks (For group application only, minimum size of the group is 10)

  Courses: Chinese Reading & Writing, Listening & Speaking, Chinese Culture, Development of China’s Economy, Banking System of China, Foreign Investment in China, Doing business in China, Chinese Educational System, Chinese Political System, Reform and Open Policy, Chinese History, Folk Customs & Practices in China, Confucianism, Costume Design, Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Taiji, etc.
