The 10th Jiangsu Horticultural Expo, hosted by Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, opened grandly on Sept 28 in Yizheng Zaolinwan Ecological Park in Yangzhou city. Each of the 13 prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu has its own distinctive exhibition area. Suzhou Park, with “Idyllic Water Township” as its theme, displays the elegant charm of Suzhou, a city synonymous with Chinese gardening.
Suzhou Park is adjacent to the south entrance and the main exhibition hall of the Horti Expo Park. Surrounded by water on three sides, it is composed of three parts, adopting elements of wooded hills, wetlands, water townships and gardens to demonstrate the classic landscape of Jiangnan water town.
At its entrance, a hedge of osmanthus, chrysanthemum, rose of Sharon and Chinese hibiscus separates the park from the peripheral square, reflecting the landscaping concept of “a winding path leading to a secluded quiet place lush with flowers and trees in all four seasons”. Its front area highlighting hilly landscape takes the Osmanthus Pavilion as its center, surrounded by osmanthus trees and bamboo groves.
The quintessence of Suzhou Park is its central area, a showcase of traditional landscaping art and technological innovations in garden construction. The steel-wood main hall is the visual center of the southern part of the Horti Expo Park, functioning as an opposite scenery of Changzhou Park and Wuxi Park. The wetlands built with traditional gardening techniques help create the unique scenery of Jiangnan water town with green willows and blooming lotus.
The construction project of the Horti Expo Park was contracted out to Suzhou Garden Development Co., Ltd, which took 14 months to complete.
This year’s expo, themed on “Characteristic Jiangsu, Beautiful Life”, will last for one month from Sept 28 to Oct 28.
